Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792) |
"The second" as it was called by contemporaries, Russo-Turkish war started due to Turks dissatisfied with Russian gains,
to have emerged through "the first" Russo-Turkish war of 1768-1774. During the first war Russians took up Moldavia, Walachia and Crimea,
blocked the strait of Dardanelles. Turkish army had to regain these lands and to prepare a bridgehead for further invasion into Europe.
Austrians were the allies of Russians in that war. Turks knew that the Russian were unprepared for the war and counted on quick victory.
In autumn of 1787 Turks approached Kinburn, a fortress at the mouth of the Dnieper river, on ships and besieged it. Russian fleet consisted
of small ships and could not hinder the Turkish landing forces. Russian troops were under command of A.V.Suvorov. He managed to effectively
organize the fortress defense and, having repulsed the attacks of Turks, turned their army into flight. In the course of this war Russians,
allied with Austrians gained a number of other victories. In 1789 Potemkin successfully assaulted Ochakov. Ushakov sunk Turkish fleet at
Fidonisi island. In 1789 Turks got defeated at Fokshany and Rimnik, and in 1790 Suvorov took up Izmail. The war ended on January 9, 1792
by concluding the Treaty of Jassy, due to which Turks recognized Russian attainments. |
